Vera Scordato is a Cavaliere, a person dedicated to keeping her world safe from dark magic and intrusions from the Fae. This involves far less battles with evil mages on storm-wreaked towers or fierce battles of wits with fiendish faeries than the stories will tell you, though. Most of the time, Cavalieri spend their days carefully patrolling small villages and lonely stretches of woods, hardly seeing anyone or anything for weeks at a time while they take notes on local conditions for the boffins back home to make assessments and prediction on where the real trouble will be. Maybe you handle a couple of small local problems that aren't even magic half the time. And Vera likes it this way. Really! She's had enough Fae and enough adventure. It's just that someone has to help and it might as well be her since she already knows the dangers well. Too bad this routine gig is about to go sideways.
